Mentorship and Opportunity: How POE is Changing Lives One Student at a Time

When Tom Feldman retired from a successful career in pharmaceutical sales, he wasn’t sure what was next. He knew he wanted to stay engaged and make a difference, but finding the right opportunity wasn’t easy. Then, he attended a donor appreciation event for POE—and everything clicked.

“I walked into that event curious about what POE was all about,” Tom says. “I left inspired. The idea of mentoring first-generation, low-income college students really stuck with me, so I decided to give it a try. What I didn’t expect was how much I’d get out of it personally.”

Over the past 10 years, Tom has mentored several students, helping them navigate challenges, build confidence, and develop skills for life after college. “One of my mentees started out studying kinesiology but realized it wasn’t the right fit. After some honest conversations, he switched to applied mathematics and is now thriving in computer programming. Watching him make that leap was incredible—it’s moments like those that remind me why this work matters.”

Tom believes POE is unique because it combines scholarships with personal mentorship. “A lot of programs hand out money and then step back. POE doesn’t do that. Mentors like me help students with resumes, internships, networking, and even life skills like self-advocacy. It’s not just about getting them through college—it’s about preparing them for life.”

Tom also sees firsthand how much scholarships mean to these students, many of whom come from families that struggle financially. “The scholarships fill the gap between what students get from universities and what they need to make college happen. Without that support, many of them wouldn’t have the chance to succeed.”

When asked why others should get involved, Tom doesn’t hesitate. “These students need guidance and someone who believes in them. As a mentor, you can help them make better decisions and build a strong foundation for their future. And as a donor, you’re giving them the resources to pursue their dreams. Together, we’re making a real difference.”
